As of April 2026, the RD-137 Campus in Chicago, Illinois, stands at the threshold of an extraordinary transformation. The historic St. Mary of the Assumption Church – where Pope Leo XIV received his early spiritual formation – is being reborn not only as a place of worship and community service, but as a national Pilgrimage Destination for Peace that will draw visitors from around the world to the South Side of Chicago.
We are actively integrating a dedicated Pilgrimage for Peace Initiative into our four-phase, $16 million campus restoration and activation plan. This initiative seeks National Register of Historic Places listing, National Historic Landmark status, and a formal partnership with the National Park Service, positioning St. Mary of the Assumption as America’s premier faith-based site tied directly to the legacy of the first American Pope.
Why This Matters – National Significance
Pope Leo XIV’s deep connection to this very ground gives St. Mary of the Assumption rare and compelling historic importance. The site embodies his lifelong commitment to mercy, social justice, education, and peace – values that resonate far beyond any single faith tradition. By pursuing national designation, we honor that legacy while creating a living destination where pilgrims, students, families, and visitors can experience hope in action through:
Restored Oratory for prayer and reflection
Peace-themed interpretive exhibits and guided tours
Integration with workforce training, digital literacy, and student success programs
Mind Care wellness programs rooted in papal teachings on mental health and community
Arts and culture programming in the Purple Panda Studio
Hospitality at the future 25-room Papal Heritage Inn, Ballroom, and Restaurant
How the Pilgrimage Initiative Fits Our Phased Plan
The initiative is not an add-on – it is woven directly into every phase of the RD-137 Campus redevelopment:
Phase 1 (April 2026 – January 2027) – While we make the entire campus weather-tight, install new electrical, water/sewer, fiber, and a 250 kW BESS system, we are simultaneously completing the historic documentation and submitting the National Register nomination. By January 2027 the Oratory will be fully operational and the first pilgrimage recognition steps will be secured.
Phase 2 (February – August 2027) – As we activate the Empower Skills Training Wing and achieve 70% job placement, we will secure the National Register listing and launch initial guided peace pilgrimages and interfaith partnerships.
Phase 3 (September 2027 – February 2028) – Health, mental health, and housing services come online alongside visitor amenities and peace meditation programs in the Mind Care Center, serving both residents and growing numbers of pilgrims.
Phase 4 (June 2028 – December 2029) – Full activation of the Papal Heritage Inn, Ballroom, Restaurant, and structured parking coincides with National Historic Landmark designation or NPS partnership. The campus becomes a complete destination capable of welcoming tens of thousands of pilgrims annually.
Projected Impact
Economic: $800,000 – $1.5 million in additional annual revenue from pilgrimage tourism, events, lodging, and dining – layered on top of the campus’s baseline hospitality and training income.
Community: Hundreds of new jobs, rising property values in Riverdale and Dolton, and a powerful new reason for the North Side and the world to come experience the strength and beauty of the South Side.
Spiritual & Social: A living monument to peace, mercy, and empowerment where education, health services, and faith converge to change lives.
We believe this initiative is not only feasible – it is timely and necessary. The combination of authentic papal heritage, a comprehensive community mission, and strategic national designation creates a once-in-a-generation opportunity to revitalize our neighborhood while offering the broader world a destination of genuine hope.
The RD-137 Campus invites partners, donors, pilgrims, and community members to join us on this journey. As we restore these sacred walls and open new doors, we are building more than a campus – we are creating a beacon that says the South Side of Chicago is rising, rooted in faith, powered by service, and open to all.
